Condensed Matter Physics: Condensed Matter Physics is the science to explore the structure of condensed matters, and the interaction and motion law of their composed particles such as atom, molecular, ion, and electron. As such, the property and application of the condensed matters can be elucidated. Condensed matters involve a wide variety of matters such as semiconductor, superconductor, crystal, magnetic substance, etc. As one of the largest and most active branches of Physics, the discipline of Condensed Matter Physics is playing an important role in the cutting edge of science and technology, which provides strong theoretical support for the development of new materials, novel technology and process.
The discipline of Condensed Matter Physics in our institute has been developed for almost twenty years. Currently, there are three main research areas in this discipline, which include low-dimensional materials for energy storage and conversion, nanostructured sensing device, and related theory in Condensed Matter Physics. The detailed study we are engaged in is as follow. Based on the design and preparation of nanostructured functional materials, the performance of the nanomaterials is expected be greatly enhanced, which are used in H2 production from catalytic water splitting, CO2 reduction to fuel, solar cell, secondary batteries, supercapacitor, etc. Moreover, the nonequilibrium process in all of the above interfaces will be explored experimentally and theoretically in the level of atom and molecular, from which the related mechanism is expected to be discovered and thereafter the support can be provided for the development of new functional materials with excellent performance.
There are 9 faculties in the discipline of Condensed Matter Physics in our institute, in which 6 are full professor, 2 associate professor and 1 assistant professor. With the financial support from National Natural Science Foundation of China, Ministry of Defence, Ministry of Education, Natural Science Foundation of Hubei Province, and Science and Technology Bureau of Wuhan City, more than 200 papers have been published on peer-reviewed international journals such as Energy Environ. Sci., Adv. Mater., Nano Lett., Adv. Funct. Mater., Nano Energy, Nat. Nanotechnol., Nat. Commun., etc, which makes a great contribution for Materials discipline in our university to get into ESI 1% around the world. Additionally, there are more than 20 issued patents in the discipline and Natural Science Award of Hubei Province has been received for three times (once for second grade and twice for third grade). Moreover, the degree thesis by the graduate students under the guidance of the faculties in this discipline has been awarded as The Best Ph.D Degree Thesis in Hubei Province and The Best Master Degree Thesis in Hubei Province for four and more than ten times respectively. Most of the graduate students cultivated in this discipline have worked in colleges and universities, scientific research institute, high school, etc., in which some graduated excellent students are working as professors and associate professors in 211 universities in China.
